In particular, the annual relative change between 2020 and 2021 was 2,96% compared to 2,65%, which means that the chains added a total of 77 new stores of all sizes in 2021 and one more, from the acquisition of a single supermarket.

Therefore, the total number of supermarkets in Greece reached 2.704 stores plus five new ones in Attica, which simply replaced five corporate ones that passed into the hands of franchisees, without changing the total number of chain stores in the region (Bazaar). In 2020 it was completed with 2.631 supermarkets.

The largest numerical change in the number of stores occurred in Attica, where 28 plus five new supermarkets were opened. This is an increase of 3,06%, compared to 2020. In absolute terms, the total number of supermarkets in Attica increased to 941 from 913.

The chains also demonstrated investment mobility in terms of new stores in the Region of Central Macedonia, where twelve new stores appeared and the acquisition of an individual supermarket was also completed, so that the number in this region reached 558 supermarkets in total. This is an increase of 2.2%.

At the same time, the entrepreneurs of the sector established eleven new stores in the Peloponnese Region, increasing their total number to 158 for 2021, from 149 in 2020. The Peloponnese Region thus recorded the largest relative percentage increase in the whole of Greece, reaching 6,04%. The specific percentage becomes even more important if one considers that in seven other regions of the country the changes in the total number of supermarkets were relatively small, with a maximum growth of 3.2%, while in three of the Greek regions, no new supermarkets were even consecrated in 2021.

The pioneers of the opening of new supermarkets in 2021

In the field, ANEDIK Kritikos led the way, which added 27 new stores to its network, with a percentage growth of 11,8% compared to 2020. Second in performance in terms of new supermarkets came the Market In chain, which established 14 new stores in in 2021. The rest of the chains followed with single-digit numbers of new stores: Hellenic Supermarkets Sklavenitis S.A.E. opened 6 new supermarkets, AB Vassilopoulos 5, Metro AEVE 4 new My markets and another 4 new supermarkets were put into operation by Bazaar.
