Tuesday, July 28, 2020

Growth 4% is recorded by IRI, for the first week of July and consequently for the second half of 2020, regarding the sales of FMCGs through the organized retail in the Greek market. Specifically, within the week ended on July 5, the turnover of supermarkets exceeded 120 million euros, compared to 115 million during the corresponding week last year, as shown in Table 1.

The super category of food was the only one that moved upwards, but less than average, as its sales increased by 2.4%, while both personal hygiene, and care items were moving faster, also as household items.

Stronger development for Thessaloniki and Crete

In Table 2 it seems that Attica moved closer to the levels of overall development- with a turnover of 5.5% - which was significantly exceeded by the stores in Thessaloniki and the Peloponnese, running with 9.2% and 7.2% respectively.

Considering the reduced tourist traffic, which is additionally said to have an effect on the turnover of fast-moving consumer goods, the only region with a double-digit recession was Crete.

The big departments run with + 15%

Regarding the type of stores, all stores had a positive sign in sales in the first week of July, as shown in Table 3. Big stores had a significant difference while sales in small stores increased marginally. This is explained by the fact that consumers continue to choose the largest stores for their shopping.

The two medium-sized categories of stores- which also own the greatest share of the total sales pie – had a single-digit rise.
